Nicodemus was a very important and clever\nJewish teacher and he came to ask Jesus some questions (at night!). He could see that the things Jesus was doing\nwere more amazing than an ordinary man could do. He was very surprised when Jesus said to him\nthat everyone, including him, would need to be \u2018born again\u2019 to be able to be\nwith God. Nicodemus was confused! How can you be born again? Well you can\u2019t! Unless you think about a change that happens\nin your heart. Your heart can be\ntransformed just like a caterpillar is completely changed into a\nbutterfly. Because to be \u2018born again\u2019 is\ntalking about the change that happens inside you. That change can happen when you want God in\nyour life and want to try and put Him first. \nSo let\u2019s build our caterpillar and then transform him\/her into a\nbutterfly!<\/p> So,\nyou have 5 pieces of a caterpillar: caterpillar body x 2, pompoms, antenna, ziplock bags for wings.<\/p> Stick\nthe caterpillar card to the peg, the side with writing on goes on the\nbottom. Then glue the pompoms to the\npeg. The head will be the end that opens. \nAdd a pipe cleaner if liked for an antennae.<\/p> God\u2019s\nlove and learning more about Jesus from the bible is like a gift to us that\ntransforms us. So I have a gift for you,\nto help you remember God\u2019s love is like a gift, you only have to accept\nit! Who is going to accept my gift?! (lollies)<\/p> The\nlollies are going to be your butterfly wings, so you will want an even\nnumber. You can choose 2 milk bottles, 2\nblackberry\/raspberries and 4 marshmallows and few cheerios. Put them in the ziplock bag, half on each\nside. Then close the bag and hold it in\nthe middle with the peg.<\/p> Do you find it easy to\ntell your friends that you are a Christian? (pause) In today\u2019s story, Peter\nwanted to have faith in Jesus, but he got scared and started to doubt. Even\nthough he knew that it was Jesus, and he had seen Jesus walk on water, Peter\nstill started to sink when he got scared.<\/p> I know that on\na Sunday morning at church is the easiest time for me to be a Christian because\nmost of the people at church are Christian as well. But outside of church I\nhave friends who aren\u2019t Christian and sometimes I struggle to talk to them\nabout Jesus because I get scared of what they might think of me. So I can identify with Peter in the story,\nbecause even though I know Jesus, I still struggle sometimes to tell my friends\nabout him.<\/p> But here is the\namazing thing, what does Jesus do when Peter doubts and starts to sink? Can you\nremember? (pause) Well, Jesus helps Peter up! That\u2019s really important for us to\nremember, because Jesus understands that sometimes we struggle, and Jesus is\nstill there for us even if we haven\u2019t been there for him. <\/p> So next time\nyou are in a situation where you are trying to decide whether or not to share\nabout Jesus, or invite a friend to church, try to remember today\u2019s story and\nhopefully it will give you the strength to do the right thing. Who has seen any\nMonarch butterflies this summer? Watched\nthem lay eggs, watch the caterpillars grow, seen the beautiful chrysalis and the\namazing butterfly come out? \nWell.... Lay your pompoms out on\nthe table as you listen to this story:<\/p> Our\nbible reading today is when Jesus talks to Nicodemus. Nicodemus was a very important and clever\nJewish teacher and he came to ask Jesus some questions (at night!). He could see that the things Jesus was doing\nwere more amazing than an ordinary man could do. He was very surprised when Jesus said to him\nthat everyone, including him, would need to be \u2018born again\u2019 to be able to be\nwith God. Nicodemus was confused! How can you be born again? Well you can\u2019t! Unless you think about a change that happens\nin your heart. Your heart can be\ntransformed just like a caterpillar is completely changed into a\nbutterfly. Because to be \u2018born again\u2019 is\ntalking about the change that happens inside you. That change can happen when you want God in\nyour life and want to try and put Him first. \nSo let\u2019s build our caterpillar and then transform him\/her into a\nbutterfly!<\/p> So,\nyou have 5 pieces of a caterpillar: caterpillar body x 2, pompoms, antenna, ziplock bags for wings.<\/p> Stick\nthe caterpillar card to the peg, the side with writing on goes on the\nbottom. Then glue the pompoms to the\npeg. The head will be the end that opens. \nAdd a pipe cleaner if liked for an antennae.<\/p> God\u2019s\nlove and learning more about Jesus from the bible is like a gift to us that\ntransforms us. So I have a gift for you,\nto help you remember God\u2019s love is like a gift, you only have to accept\nit! Who is going to accept my gift?! (lollies)<\/p> The\nlollies are going to be your butterfly wings, so you will want an even\nnumber. You can choose 2 milk bottles, 2\nblackberry\/raspberries and 4 marshmallows and few cheerios. Put them in the ziplock bag, half on each\nside. Then close the bag and hold it in\nthe middle with the peg.<\/p> In today\u2019s story, Jesus talked about two people, a Pharisee and\na Tax Collector who went to the temple to pray. They prayed quite different\nprayers, didn\u2019t they? What were some of the differences you noticed between\ntheir prayers? (Pause for discussion)<\/em> Well, the difference that I want to talk\nabout today is that the Pharisee was comparing himself to the tax collector to\nshow God how much better that the tax collector he was. But the tax collector\nwas more concerned with getting his relationship with God right first.<\/p> How many of you have something that\nyou are good at? Like playing soccer, or drawing or anything? (Pause for\nanswers)<\/em>. Well, how do you know you are good at that thing? (Pause) <\/em>Sometimes,\nto help me get a better idea about how I am doing, I compare how well I do\nsomething; to how well my friends do that something. This is ok, but if I end\nup spending too much time comparing myself to other people, I will end up\nfeeling bad about myself. You see, there will always be people that are better\nat you in some areas, and worse than you in other areas. <\/p> But the one thing that\nwe can all be the best at is being ourselves. You are special because God made\nyou unique. There is no one else in the world that can be better at being you\nthan you can. God isn\u2019t worried about how good you are in comparison to other\npeople. God is concerned about whether you are being the best you that you can\nbe. And that means being honest about the things that are bad as well as the\nthings that are good. That way, you can learn about how to be the person that\nGod made you to be.<\/p> Encourage the children to take the noise makers back into church, and during the\nfinal song to shake them to the
